Biodiversity Conservation

Uganda is blessed with a rich variety of faunal species-ranging from mountain gorillas, forest elephants, and shoebill storks among others to floral diversity that include rare medicinal plants, indigenous tree species, unique freshwater organisms and rich underground biodiversity. It is, however, suffice to note that rapid deforestation, climate change, pollution, overexploitation, and habitat encroachment threaten this delicate balance of life. Our Biodiversity Conservation Program is committed to protecting all forms of biodiversity-animals, plants, including the aquatic and underground lifeforms.

Under this program, we work with communities, researchers, policy makers and diversity of stakeholders to:

  • Safeguard Biodiversity: Protect endangered and endemic species through in-situ and ex-situ conservation, seed banks, botanical gardens, and protected area management.
  • Restore Ecosystems: Rehabilitate degraded forests, wetlands, and grasslands that serve as habitats for countless species.
  • Empower People: Support communities with eco-friendly alternatives and sustainable livelihoods that reduce dependence on natural habitats.
  • Promote Awareness and Research: Increase public understanding of the value of all species-plants, animals, and microorganisms-while advancing scientific knowledge to guide conservation action.
  • Foster Coexistence: Create solutions that allow people and nature to thrive together, ensuring long-term ecological balance.
