DIALOGUE ON DANGERS OF MERCURY AND ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIES TO MERCURY USE AMONG ARTISINAL SMALL- SCALE GOLD MINERS (ASGM) IN UGANDA

The Action Coalition on Climate Change is organising a National Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the dangers and alternative technologies to mercury use among ASGM. The dialogue will involve the mining communities, civil society, Members of Parliament and the relevant government ministries and agencies. The Dialogue is meant to inform the public about the dangers of mercury and available alternatives to its use among small scale gold miners and possible recommendations to the government for action. The Dialogue planned for 3 rd December 2019 (Tuesday) at Grand Global Hotel (Makerere Kikoni, off Sir Apolo Kagwa Road) starting from 8:30am – 5:00pm. ACCC engagements are geared towards eventual elimination of mercury use among ASGM while promoting its alternatives technologies that are environmentally friendly. Our Initiatives are in line with the Minamata Convention on mercury to which Uganda is a signatory to. Mindful that many countries have abandoned and banned the use of mercury.
